Chairman Al Haj Murad Ebrahim of the Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF) has issued a message of solidarity and unity to the Bangsamoro people and the Muslim ummah throughout the world on the occasion of the start of the fasting month of Ramadan tomorrow, September 13, 2007. He called on his fellow Bangsamoro people and the world Muslim ummah numbering over a billion souls to unite behind the “rope of Allah and never to divide”.
He also took the occasion to “convey his sincerest gratitude to all our supporters and sympathizers including the international community for their continuing support to the ongoing peace process between the Moro Islamic Front and the Government of the Republic of the Philippines.”
Fasting is the fourth pillar of Islam. The other four are 1)Testifying that there is no god except Allah and Muhammad is His messenger; 2) Daily five times prayers; 3) Giving zakat or poor’s due; and 4) Pilgrimage to Mecca for those who can afford the journey financially and physically.
All prophets of Allah enjoined fasting during their time.
Fasting entails abstaining from food, drink and sex from dawn until sunset with the intention of attaining nearness to Allah. It is obligatory everyday throughout the lunar month of Ramadan.
Islam says that fasting is the only act of Muslims, which is directly rewarded by Allah. Other pious acts including prayers are rewarded indirectly by Allah.
This is so, according to Muslim jurists, because fasting is strictly between an individual Muslim and Allah, because no one sees what is he or she is doing or thinking in the deepest chamber of his heart. A fast can be broken by merely thinking in your heart that you are not fasting anymore or surreptitiously drink water away from the gaze of men.
To non-believers of Islam, fasting is an impossible act to perform; imagine eating or drinking nothing from dawn to sunset. But to true believers of Islam, fasting is not very difficult because the spirit is willing and the physical prepared to undergo it. It is devotion to Allah that sets difficult things easy.
In his message, Murad enumerated the gains Muslim get in undertaking fasting
