In a special schooling conducted by the General Staff of the Bangsamoro Islamic Armed Forces (BIAF) recently, one high ranking military leader, who spoke to Luwaran on condition of anonymity, disclosed that one of the enemies of a truly Islamic revolutionary movement is the tendency of some leaders to think of reforms rather than finding the true solution to the age-old conflict in Mindanao. The schooling, which is being conducted by the BIAF-GS regularly in undisclosed locations, aimed at raising the ideological and political consciousness of the MILF commanders and freedom fighters to prepare them for a long drawn-out struggle. A separate training for military science and tactics is also being pursued.

He called these ideas as rightist inclinations, which he explained as those who joined the struggle but in reality working for the entrenchment of the old attitudes, practices, values that favored only the elites of society.

These include, he added, those who joined the MILF organization but actually harboring selfish agenda like waiting for opportunities from the government like dole-outs, jobs, etc.

In a revolutionary struggle, generally there are categories of members or leaders, rightist, the middle force, and the radicals. Unless the ideological and political lines are clearly drawn, the struggle within the organization continues unabated. But even if the organization has very clear ideological and political lines, but there are those who are stuck to their beliefs and cannot toe the lines, and therefore time will come for eventual reckoning.

This internal struggle of ideas had struck the Moro National Liberation Front and the National Democratic Front. The MNLF was splintered into at least five sub-groups. One of the sub-groups, which is now the biggest and strongest group, is the Moro Islamic Liberation Front.

Similarly, the NDF is splintered into at least four sub-groups, with the mainstream NDF under Jose Maria Sison emerging as the biggest and strongest.

Asked whether the MILF is experiencing this problem, he said this is normal dynamics of any revolutionary organization.

“We are addressing this problem through sustained education for our political and military components of the MILF,” he said.
