The Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF), in a rare stance, appealed to the Filipino people to mellow their down activities against those over you, referring to whoever becomes president of the Philippines. Khaled Musa, deputy chairman of the MILF Committee on Information, made the appeal as lawmakers loyal to President Arroyo are contemplating on amending the 20-year old Philippine Constitution, which he described as man-made and imperfect that needs to be updated.
He cited the need for such amendment of the Constitution in case the government and the MILF succeed to sign the comprehensive compact in order to conform to Philippine legal processes.
However, he was quick to clarify that this constitutional process is internal to the government and the MILF is not a party to it. The MILF is dealing with the government and it is up to the government to carry out, including undertaking internal legal processes, to comply with the agreement.
But if many Filipino politicians oppose this charter change because they mistrust President Arroyo, accusing her of using it to stay longer in power, then they want war to continue in Mindanao, he quipped.
One of those registering stiff opposition to this charter change is former President Joseph Estrada, who was found guilty beyond doubt of corruption and abuse of power and imprisoned, but got a conditional pardon from Arroyo recently.
He warned the government that “there will be hell to pay if charter change is pushed by the Arroyo administration”.
However, many dismissed the warning as nothing less than propaganda gimmick from a man who has no moral authority to speak ill of corruption and other evil excesses, which after all caused his downfall from the presidency.
Musa reiterated his appeal to the Filipinos to give Arroyo the chance to serve the people well during the last stretch of her term, even as he also urges them to be vigilant in order to oppose any move to rob them of their precious liberty and freedom.
He said Arroyo is the Filipinos’ leader and it is impractical to pull her down and let chaos, hatred and disunity again reign and start all over again with someone who will do the same evil deeds as the one being replaced.
“Bear with her,” he urged them, “after all she is also good in many ways especially her handling of the peace process in Mindanao.”
