The Central Committee of the Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF) has directed its members in Sulu, both in the political and military sectors, to identify themselves and lived with the people of the Island Province to ensure that they really represent them. Muhammad Ameen, chairperson of the MILF Secretariat, emphasized the need for popular leadership in order to ensure that they really carry the mandate of the people. He reminded them that popular support is one of the five factors that determine the outcome of a revolutionary struggle. He recalled that several political and military leaders of revolutionary organizations used threat and blackmail to get the support of the people, which he described as frustratingly bad and feudal. He said these acts will boomerang to the organization and once the people are fed up they will reject the organization, and it is as good as a dead organization. “Always serve the people wholeheartedly, second to Allah,” he stressed. Sulu, Tawi-Tawi, and Palawan are the latest of the provinces in Western Mindanao whose populations including some leaders of other Moro groups rally behind the MILF in its bid to liberate the people from bondage and servitude. These provinces are traditionally MNLF areas, but in recent years the people showed frustrations with the MNLF when it cannot deliver what were expected of them, after signing the peace deal in 1996. The MILF has already put up both committees and military structures in these provinces and are reportedly capable of responding in case of national emergency such as when the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) decide to launch military offensive against the MILF in Central Mindanao.
