MANILA, Philippines -- The European Commission announced Wednesday it has approved $20.6 million in grants for rebuilding areas in the southern Philippines hit by decades of Muslim insurgency.
The grants, worth 14 million Euros, will go towards improving governance, helping the region integrate in the international trading system and rebuilding the island of Mindanao, which has been ravaged by decades of fighting between the government and Muslim rebel groups.
They will go to programs developed in consultation with the government and with civil society groups, Alistair MacDonald, European Commission delegation head said.
"The European Community is bent on helping the Philippines in its economic, social and political reform processes, by providing support to deepen dialogue on governance with and among all sectors of society, to promote trade and investment flows, and to help restore peace and security in Mindanao," he said.
