MILF-GRP peace talks deffered PDF Print E-mail

The frequent postponement of the peace talks between the Government of the Republic of the Philippines and the Moro Islamic Liberation Front has become the subject of discussion among observers of the Bangsamoro socio-political scene. The question has been raised is why government always make the postponement? Is it for delaying tactics or find the most appropriate time to think and rethink the most suitable solution or condition the minds of the panelists?  These are significant questions of attitude that must be addressed because our people and outside observers are watching and they are expected to give their constructive criticism.

Malaysia alone might pull out its personnel who are with the International Monitoring Team which has been tasked to watch the MILF-GRP ceasefire agreement if the peace talks will realize to be fruitless.

The frequent delayed might also be attributed to the question of law. The Philippine laws prohibits political disintegration of the country and provides the value of national integration. The government  cannot afford to give political independence to the Bangsamoro. On the other hand, the MILF, the Moro National Liberation Front and the Bangsamoro in general are still in the process of uniting themselves as one nation with common vision in order to bring about Islamic society and government.

Recently, the MILF used to alarm the government the possible adverse consequences if both will fail to sign the final agreement which both are projecting to realize on or before August 2008.  Mohaguer Iqbal, MILF chief negotiator, expressed pessimism for peace negotiations spearheaded in the future by younger leaders who could be "more radical."

"It is timely for the MILF to strike a peace deal with the government because the present leadership of the MILF is run by rational people," Iqbal told foreign TV personalities and reached the Luwaran in a recent meeting at the front’s central committee headquarters in Maguindanao.

Meanwhile, Mohagher Iqbal, MILF chief negotiator, said.  retired general Rodolfo Garcia, who heads the government peace panel, called him up and informed him of the government’s decision postponing the resumption of the exploratory talks with the government on December 4-6 in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia without citing a reason.

"I was unofficially informed by my counterpart that the 15th GRP-MILF exploratory talks were temporarily suspended. We are not sure as of yet when the meeting will be scheduled,” Iqbal said in a text message to the Philippine Daily Inquirer (parent company of INQUIRER.net).

Therefore, the GRP-MILF peace talks cannot arrive to a perfect conclusion satisfying both sides. Its outstanding delayed significantly gains financial supports for rehabilitation and sustainability but obviously sacrifices the lives of many government troops and mujahideen. It is timely for the affected people to think and speak out with wisdom.

MILF means Moro Islamic Liberation Front headed by Chairman Murad Ibrahim and GRP means Government of the Republic of the Philippines headed by President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo.
