Marawi (31-Oct-2007) - Elections here left four dead and more than 40 percent of barangays without elections.

The four  dead include the son of a barangay chairman in barangay Lilod Saduc and his three followers.

Voter’s complaints ranged from having no master list of voters, book of voters and no election officer greeting residents of this sleepy town greeted by gunfires from several disputing barangay contenders .

Crowds of supporters of local chieftains awaited election announcements from officials until city officials announced Monday 10 in the morning that more than 50 barangays are uncontested but await word from COMELEC which barangays would hold elections.

More than 60,000 voters from 96 barangays in the Islamic City of Marawi were expected to vote at the designated schools.

Political violence is one of the major features in elections here where family relations in clan systems are tightly knit.

Local traditions prevail where political power is treated as a source of maratabat (pride) and honor.
