The largest hacking event in the country happened here, described a computer analyst , who refused to be disclosed, describing the stoppage of SMART Communication’ s internet service in Marawi City for more than a month now, affecting more than 500 individual computer owners, 87 internet shops and eventually closing some of them.
"This has never happened at a large scale anywhere in the country," the analyst said.
SMART central office has not offered any explanation on what happened to the SMART net service in Marawi City . The incident has been reported to the National Telecommunication Commission (NTC) and is being investigated. ABS-CBN has attempted to interview local SMART Contractors but the same refused to disclose details.
The analyst suspects a "competitor" is responsible for the hacking of the SMART system. He suspects they are local business people involved in retail sales of GLOBE Telecom services. " The hackers can easily be traced using SMART database tracking system," he said.
SMART offers cheaper service at 999 pesos monthly, without any additional cost for installation or repair, the analyst notes. GLOBE and SMART are the two broadband service providers in Marawi City .
He warns the hackers that they are liable for crimes penalized under the E-Commerce Law and those provided by the NTC.
Repairs of internet subscriber's antenna in Marawi City are underway, with more than 20 computer units scheduled per day, reports the SMART Marawi City Contractors.

Thousands of Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF) fighters are expected to join the MILF’s expanded central committee meeting to be presided by Chairman Al-Hajj Murad Ebrahim on March 9-11 in Butig, Lanao del Sur to discuss the stalled Mindanao peace process.
Mohagher Iqbal, who chairs the MILF’s panel in the peace talks with the national government, said the event is intended for consultation with the various sectors of the Bangsamoro society.
"The MILF is holding a consultation meeting. We are inviting members of the media on the last day, March 11. A press conference will be held at 8 a.m.," said Iqbal.
It was recalled that Butig is the place where the then MILF Chairman Salamat Hashim died on July 13, 2003.
Eid Kabalu, MILF civil-military chief, said the gathering is also an expanded meeting of the members of the group’s central committee, which is also the front’s highest policy-making body.
"We expect scores of participants and attendees because practically all the front’s leaders will be there. No politician was invited, but everybody is welcome," said Kabalu.
"This activity has already been coordinated with the government through the Coordinating Committee on the Cessation of Hostilities," he also said.
From Camp Darapanan in Shariff Kabunsuan, a convoy of tens of vehicles will travel to Butig, escorted by armed MILF guerrillas.
Kabalu said the arming of the MILF guerrillas was approved by the government through the CCCH.
At present, the negotiation with the government has again hit a snag due to the government peace panel’s insistence on using constitutional parameter for the creation of the homeland of the Moro people through the proposed Bangsamoro Juridical Entity (BJE).
But this has consistently been opposed by the MILF, with front leaders saying they won’t budge an inch from their stand.
Kabalu said all aspects of the Mindanao peace process will be tackled at the Butig meeting, and the stakeholders who are expected to attend will hear an update on the negotiations.
Last month, United States Ambassador Kristie Kenney visited the MILF’s Camp Darapanan and met with Murad and other rebel leaders.
Kenney reiterated the US commitment to help in the peace process.

Almost four months after the death of Basilan Governor Wahab Akbar on November 13, 2007, government lawmen are still struggling to collar the real killers. There were suspects including former Congressman Gerry Salapuddin and Partylist Cong. Mujiv Hataman, but were they the real killers or masterminds? Six persons including Basilan Rep. Wahab Akbar, were killed in the deadly Batasan blast. Five of the fatalities were employees of the House: Marcial Taldo; Jul-Asiri Hayundini; Maan Gale Bustalino; Dennis Manila and Vercia Garcia.
Wounded in the attack were Negros Oriental Rep. Henry Teves, Gabriela Rep. Luzviminda Ilagan and three other House employees.
Whether Hataman and Salapuddin are guilty of the death of Akbar is the real purpose of the filing the case against them.
However, immediately after the deadly blast, a reporter of Luwaran based in Manila already received a very reliable report that one political leader in Central Mindanao, who begged off anonymity, was warned that he and Governor Akbar were the object of an assassination plot engineered by a powerful Moro politician. Said leader, fearing to be misunderstood by Akbar, informed a powerful man close to the corridors of power to instead relay the warning to Akbar. That was about a week before the blast. When inquired of the warning after the blast, whether relayed or not, the powerful man replied, “He forgot”.
The source said the motive behind the killing was political. Akbar was proved an ambitious politician. He did not hide his intention to become leader outside of his province, including the Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (ARMM).
Meantime, the arrest order for the suspects was issued by Quezon City Regional Trial Court Judge Ralph Lee after Salapuddin and suspects Harajun Jamiri, Benjamin Hataman and Bayan Judda failed to attend a scheduled arraignment.
The four were earlier added as suspects in the amended information submitted by government prosecutors.
However, both the camps of Salapuddin and Hataman denied a warrants of arrest were issued against their leaders, saying the reports were not only “unfair” but also “inaccurate”.
Anak Mindanao Party-list Rep. Mujiv Hataman, who was earlier implicated in the Batasan bombing, said he feels vindicated that the Department of Justice cleared his name on this unfortunate incident that brought so much pain to his family and Basileños.
“I just hope that our authorities will respect the rights of the accused who remain innocent. Let their constitutional right to due process be observed,” he said.
He added that law enforcers should refrain arresting “fall guys” just to show that they are doing their job, and that they dig deeper into the case.

The Moro Islamic Liberation Front is the forerunner of the Islamic movement in the Bangsamoro homeland in Mindanao and the neighbouring islands. It was organized in 1977 when Ustadz Hashim Salamat, backed up by ethnic Maguindanaos and other Muslim tribal leaders from Mindanao, split from the Moro National Liberation Front, advocating a more pacifying approach toward the government. In January 1987, the MNLF signed a peace agreement relinquishing its goal of independence for the Bangsamoro homeland and accepting the government's offer of autonomy. The MILF refused to accept such accord and hence initiated and continue its struggle against the government to have a separate State.
Generally, Bangsamoro are Muslims who should be governed by the Shariah which is the totality of the commandments of Allah. Their struggle to have society free from the colonialist is a “continuing cycle.” They believe that the MILF as an Islamic movement is struggling for the establishment of their separate Islamic State.
Recently, on February 25, 2008, the MILF, quoted in Luwaran.com, categorically denied having anything to do with text that says that Al Haj Murad would soon declare Mindanao as an Islamic State and he becomes its President with the backing of the United Nations and the Organization of Islamic Conference (OIC). Murad, speaking through Muhammad Ameen, chairperson of the MILF Secretariat, branded the text a plain and simple black propaganda, out to drive a wedge between the Christians and the Muslims in Mindanao.
The exact text I received also from a friend runs thus: “March 14, 2008 Al Haj Murad Ebrahim declare by the United Nations and Organization of Islamic Conference as a Bangsamoro President. All MILF has to provide military uniform 4 d implementation of Islamic State under the leadership of MILF Chairman Al Haj Murad.”
Ameen said the issue of religion is internal to the Muslims in Mindanao and the MILF has been never brought up this issue in the decade-old peace talks with the government.
“We follow the principle of consultation and collectivism in decision making particularly in the most difficult ones,” he stressed, recalling that when the late MILF Chairman Salamat Hashim was asked about the system of government once the MILF assumes power in Mindanao, said, ‘This depends on what the people decide and want for themselves.”
Salamat said if the Bangsamoro people want communist government, “so be it’”, which illustrates how the late leader values the voice of the people. This sweeping statement has been observed in the western democratic society that sovereignty is vested upon the people and not in Allah. Obviously, people have different perceptions and opinions on how to establish the system of government according to their knowledge, experiences and other factors. To the Muslims in particular, Islamic State should be established according to Shariah.
In Islam, sovereignty belongs to Allah. He has unlimited powers. All kingdoms, empires, and kings do not possess such authority. Allah is the Creator, the Master, the Sustainer of all that exists. Everything operates according to His plan.
Allah has revealed, through His prophets, the Right Path for the guidance of mankind. All prophets (peace and blessings be upon them) have preached the same message - that of acceptance of Allah’s sovereignty. They invited men and women to a life committed to virtue, purity, justice and peace, and to act according to the guidance He has revealed.
The MILF as an Islamic movement is expected to act according to the will of Allah, that misunderstanding, conflict and the passing of the system of government for the Muslims must be referred in Allah through His devine words, the Qur’an and His Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessing of Allah be upon hom) through his Sunnah (tradition). In Surah Al-Nisah of the Qur’an, Allah says: “Oh you believe obey Allah, obey the apostle and those charged with authority among you and If you differ anything, refer it to Allah and His Prophet if you believe in Allah and the Last Day. That is the best for you for final determination.”
Thus, the MILF reliance to the decision of the people about its system of government once it assumes political power in Mindanao vehemently contradicts the sovereign authority of Allah.
