MILF leader urges politicians, media not to 'inflame' Muslims

by MM Gillera in Cagayan de Oro City
Newsbreak

A leader of the Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF) is urging politicians and the media not to "inflame" Muslims especially at a time when many Muslims feel bad about the botched signing of the agreement that would have given them rights over their ancestral homeland.

Ghazali Jaafar, MILF vice-chairman for political affairs, told Newsbreak that political leaders and the media should be sensitive and cautious so that their statements do not inflame Muslims who are frustrated with the cancellation of the Memorandum of Agreement on Ancestral Domain (MOA-AD).

The August 5 signing in Malaysia of the MOA-AD between the Arroyo administration and the MILF was postponed after the Supreme Court issued a temporary restraining order August 4 in response to petitions of politicians who claimed they were not consulted on the deal and that it is unconstitutional.

MILF has no control over commanders – Yano PDF Print E-mail

By JAMES MANANGHAYA

Armed Forces chief Gen. Alexander Yano said the deadly attacks on several towns in Mindanao by Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF) rebels showed the secessionist group’s lack of control over its field commanders.

“It appears that several MILF sub-commanders are not controlled by the MILF leadership and are just using the peace process as a blanket to launch violent attacks against the people of Mindanao,” Yano said at a press briefing at Camp Aguinaldo Monday.

“These developments are clear manifestations of the insincerity to the peace process of a significant portion of the MILF,” he added.

He said the separatist rebels’ rampage, starting with the ambush of government troops in Lanao del Sur, is a “virtual declaration of war against the duly constituted authority, which was confirmed by Commander Bravo’s declaration of jihad or Holy War.”

“The AFP shall not allow this to go on, we cannot allow ambuscades, arson, kidnapping, hostage taking, blocking of main highways and other atrocities to be perpetrated by the MILF against the Filipino people,” he said.

28 civilians, 3 soldiers killed in rebel attacks in south

Agence France-Presse

ILIGAN - At least 28 civilians and three soldiers were killed Monday in a wave of Muslim separatist rebel attacks in the southern Philippines, witnesses and officials said.

Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF) rebels raided several towns in southern Lanao del Norte province, looting businesses, burning homes and randomly attacking the mostly Christian villagers, officials said.

Nine bodies were lying bloodied by a roadside in the village of Lapayan in Kauswagan town as black smoke billowed from houses burning nearby, AFP reporters said.

Five other civilians were killed in a neighbouring village, residents fleeing the area told AFP. Six more bodies were found in Kauswagan later Monday.

All 20 bodies were taken by troops to two mortuaries in Iligan city a few kilometres (miles) away, an AFP reporter saw.

Meanwhile, in the town of Kolambugan, six civilians and three soldiers were killed, mayor Beltran Lumaque said in a radio interview.

Another rebel unit struck the town of Maasim, leaving two civilians dead as they ransacked a pawnshop and looted a drug store, said military spokesman Major Randolph Cabangbang.

At least three people were injured in two separate bomb blasts Sunday afternoon in Iligan City.

An initial report from ABS-CBN Iligan said the first blast took place at 5:45 p.m. at a motel in the city. An unidentified motel employee was injured in the attack.

Thirty minutes after the first incident, another bomb went off, this time at the Travelers' Inn. A four-year-old boy was hurt.

Police also said that an unidentified man, who they believed planted the bomb, was also injured.

Bomb experts, meanwhile, were sent to a guard the Casa Royal hotel, also in the city, after reports that an improvised explosive device (IED), has been discovered there.

Officials said that initial evidence gathered point to IEDs as the ones used in the motel and Travelers' Inn blasts.

Authorities are now investigating leads to determine if the Moro Islamic Liberation Front was responsible in the bombings or if the incidents were related to the recent Autonomous Region of Muslim Mindanao elections.

Iligan has been a hotbed of protests against the proposed Bangsamoro Juridical Entity that would create an expanded ARMM.

The MILF has been accusing Mayor Lawrence Cruz of paying citizens to speak out agains the BJE, a charge that the public official denied.

Last week, experts defused a bomb planted near a school in North Cotabato, just days after the end of brutal clashes between Muslim rebels and government forces in the area.

The homemade bomb was found near a government school in M'lang town, a military statement said, without giving further details.

On Friday night, an IED was also detonated by Army bomb experts near the residence of the mayor of M'lang Friday night. The IED was the second to be found in the town within the day and the third since Thursday.

A live grenade was also found near a cinema inside a Zamboanga City mall the same day.The city's bomb squad reported that a janitor discovered the grenade with its safety pin intact inside the Mindpro Citimall. The initial report said that the janitor was cleaning the vicinity of the mall's Cinema 5 when he saw the grenade lodged in a corner.
